Protecting autonomy at birth

Recently the Mexican government published a legal project to regulate midwives and anyone practising midwifery care. All over Mexico midwives are standing up against this law (which is to get passed this september 2024). Our foundation is reaching out to mothers and families that have been supported by a midwife at home.

What is really in danger with this regulation is AUTONOMY of human beings and especially for women to choose to give birth at home, with the provider she chooses. The law obliges all midwives to register their clients and inform the government on their status. The government will decide whether a midiwfe can practice, if she can attend a birth or not and will be trained and examed every 2 years. Also traditional midwives will not be able to post their knowledge or work on social media.

This law was written without midwives, it is being imposed both on midwives and mothers,
