BIRTHWORK

Dignified births for all

At the Osa Mayor Foundation, our commitment to "Dignified Births for All" extends to both expectant mothers and the midwives who care for them. We prepare midwives for this mission by providing comprehensive training, education, and mentorship, equipping them with the skills and cultural competency needed to run their practice or birthcenter and ensure every birth is a dignified experience, regardless of the setting.

Moreover, we actively promote homebirth as a means to ensure the social acceptance of midwifery care. We engage in community outreach and advocacy efforts to educate and raise awareness about the benefits of homebirth, emphasizing the value of midwifery in fostering a supportive, empowering, and respectful environment for mothers during one of life's most transformative moments. Through our collective endeavors, we aim to make dignified homebirths a recognized and respected choice for all.

COMMUNITY

Naj Na

The Naj Na Community Project, meaning 'mother houses' in Maya, is a visionary endeavor rooted in the belief that community living impulses meaningful social change. Led by two mothers, a midwife, and an anthropologist, this non-profit initiative is situated on virgin jungle, minutes from a Maya village. At its core, the Naj Na project aspires to create a harmonious intercultural community guided by maternal principles of nurturing and creating life. This innovative living concept is built upon the values of love, liberty, peace, and respect for life's rhythms, fostering compassion for creativity and spirit. Clan Houses, the heart of this Womb Space, form a unique architectural expression embodying these maternal ideals. Here, we encourage a sustainable coexistence with nature, engage in knowledge exchange with neighboring Maya communities, and ensure the preservation of wildlife, water, and forest reserves for generations to come. This visionary project embodies the transformative power of community, where each member has equal rights and where abundance, not competition, is the economic cornerstone.

EDUCATION

Autonomous learning

The Escuela de Parteras supports autonomy by empowering midwives with the knowledge, skills, and clinical abilities they need to provide autonomous and respectful care to expectant mothers. Through comprehensive training, mentorship, and the creation of clinical skills and abilities training centers, the school equips midwives to make informed decisions that are tailored to the unique needs of each birthing experience. By fostering cultural competency and emphasizing the importance of preserving traditional midwifery wisdom, the school enables midwives to practice autonomously while respecting the diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs of the mothers they serve. This approach not only respects the autonomy of midwives but also upholds the autonomy of expectant mothers, allowing them to make empowered choices about their birthing experiences.
